Biographical information...

"Playing music since childhood seems to make a difference in approach..." was a ground-shaking quote for me to hear. I forget who said it to me, but looking back, it was the early groups that helped me develop as an improvisor. I don't mean improvisation reduced to "off-the-cuff making it up." There's so much more to it...it's nearly impossible to describe without including an audience, stage lighting, and real live chemistry. Sure, when I was a saxophonist in the high-school band I did more than my fair share of practicing in the kitchen (before I could drive...), and making noise always made me feel a warm vibe, but my fascination was mostly because I liked the way my sound mixed with the other noises created around me during performance. It was amazing to me that we could read dots on a page and have that much emotive power...our collaberative efforts to decorate a piece of time was celebrated by appreciative folks...our families, our friends...remembering their stints with music in their past, judges at competitions who gave us tips to become more effective in the ears and eyes of the listener...eventually that led to playing in a "real" band, showing off at parties that were, in retrospect, our higher education.

Yup, learned alot those days..One thing was the concept of music as a conversation in which us musicians could take a theme, throw our input in, then discuss it, making up theories and jokes on the theme...just commenting in agreement sometimes, or trying to take the idea in a different direction. With this understanding, we could do what every good converstation does...make everyone around you think.

Music is magical because of it's ability to include large numbers of people in on the conversation...they know what we're talking about, so they can identify with all of it. If we're talking about love and happiness, and our converstation is a deep one, an audience can feel that, and join in by expressing themselves. Sometimes that's by throwing tomatoes at the stage. Sometimes that's by being really angry. I like to make people happy, myself. I like the energy I recieve from the audience when I make them feel good. Of course, I have my bad and sad days, and sometimes it gets recorded, but since we all have a choice of what to project (most of the time), I wanna spread groovin, exstatic happiness. It makes shows more fun..

Through this, um, call it a mission statement, I have had a unique chance to expand my boundaries as a saxophonist, playing with more than my fair share of incredible players, covering ground with dozens of artists and groups of many styles, including classical, jazz, funk, rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk, and psychedelic. I've also been fortunate enough to hook up with a variety of incredible regional bands, playing sax during their sets, then borrowing their drummers for a Warr Guitar/Drums improvisational set where setbreak is usually placed.

There's a ton of great live music happenin' all around you, so go out and support it! Your artistic communities have worked hard to earn your respect and support, so find what you like and don't be afraid to support it!

Cheers,

Myron
